The Zimmerman Thunder lost to first-place St. Cloud Cathedral 2-0 on Tuesday in what coach Jeff Downing said was probably “the most complete game we have put together.”
Playing in stiff wind and some sideways precipitation, the Thunder gave up a goal in each half to the Crusaders, who are 4-0 in the Granite Ridge and 8-1-1 overall.
Thunder goalie Abby Vaton made some saves in the first have but couldn’t stop a shot by Cia Strong, who got behind the defense after an interception by Annie Johnson, in the 29th minute.
The Thunder (0-4 in conference and 2-10-1 overall) stayed within 1-0 until Cathedral’s Ellie Engel scored on a corner kick in the 66th minute.
Zimmerman has four matches left in the regular season, all in conference. Next is at Rockford on Tuesday, 7 p.m.
“This has been a season of growth so far,” said Downing, “and we expect to end positively just as we enter section play.”
