Soccer: Crimson girls rout Elks 6-1

Elk River fell behind 5-0 in the first half against a faster Maple Grove team and wound up losing 6-1 on a wind-swept field Tuesday evening in Maple Grove.

“We struggled adjusting to their speed and the wind, and got beat too many times down the line where they maintained pressure on us,” said coach Brian Steuter about the first half when Maple Grove had the wind at their backs.

The Crimson (5-3-1) got two goals from Mariah Morrisette, two goals from Kailey Beatt, and one each from Lauren Schwarzrock and Haley Nelson. In goal was Casey Autey.

The Elks had a chance to open the scoring when Logan Daulton got behind the defense and put up a strong shot but it hit the crossbar, after which the Crimson moved swiftly the other way and scored.

“In the second half we tried to get back into it but we did not have the pace or energy,” said Steuter.

Jenna Kivley scored the lone goal on “a beautiful corner kick” that curled into the net as she bent it into the wind.

Kayla Zehowski gave up the five goals in the first half and Brienna Dehkes gave up one in the second half.

The Elks will host Park Center on Thursday, 7 p.m.
