Volleyball: Thunder place 3rd in Big Lake tournament

The Zimmerman Thunder placed third in the Big Lake Invitational on Saturday after losing in the first round to the eventual champion.

The Thunder (4-8) lost to Watertown-Mayer 25-7, 25-22, then got a bye in the consolation bracket because one team (Sioux Falls) didn’t show up.

The Thunder edged Big Lake 24-21, 15-25, 15-13 in a back-and-forth match.

In the third place match, the Thunder squeezed Foley 25-15, 25-23, rallying from a 22-17 deficit in game two.

“That was one of our best matches as a team,” said coach Rita Belka. “We are learning how to come back.”

In the tournament, Nikki O’Keefe made 19 kills, Brooke Borchardt 13 and Janae Mettling 11.  Amanda Medeen provided 46 assists. Emily Garmen led wit h26 digs, and had a 2.1 passing rating.

Zimmerman will play at Foley on Thursday.
