Elk River won three of four matches and placed third among 16 teams in the Sauk Rapids-Rice tournament on Saturday. Wadena-Deer Creek beat the Elks and repeated as champon.
The Elks (8-2) opened with a 25-7, 25-16 win over St. Cloud Cathedral, boosted by strong serving, 45-for-49 with 13 aces. Jordan Moening aced five of 11 serves and Kara Ziemer three of six. Jayde Krauth led at the net with eight kills in just 11 attempts.
The Elks outlast Melrose 20-25, 25-19, 15-6, firing off 34 kills, led by Ziemer with 11, Moening 10 and Janel Finkbeiner six. Moening served 21-for-21 with six aces and team was 54-for-60 with nine aces. Finbeiner made 20 assists.
Wadena-Deer Creek had a tough time with the Elks but prevailed 25-8, 21-25, 15-12. The Elks were undone by 18 hitting errors, and were able to ace only five serves. Krauth and Ziemer had eight kills each. Ziemer led with eight digs and 21 serve-receives.
In a third-place match, the Elks battled past Little Falls 22-25, 25-15, 15-6. Moening had 10 kills, Ziemer seven and Krauth six. Kelsey Owens served 5-for-6 and had three of the team’s nine aces. Moening had two, giving her 16 for the day. Finkbeiner made 14 assists and Bailey Lundquist 12. Ziemer led with 17 serve receives.
Elk River will host Andover on Tuesday.
