Ryan Ness scored the game-winner after stealing the ball as the Elk River-Zimmerman soccer team edged Coon Rapids in overtime there Thursday night.
Grant Tesdahl had the other goal as the Elks improved to 3-5 on a night they weren’t sharp.
“We played well Tuesday against Anoka and lost, and we did not play that well tonight and won,” said coach Tom Olson. “But that’s a good thing when you can be off your game and still win.”
Tesdahl scored in the 12th minute off a throw-in from Kaleb Orrock. He had a good run at the ball and headed it in.
Alex Lopez of Coon Rapids (3-6) tied the score with just 1:30 left in the second half.
The first five-minute OT period was a stalemate.
Ness, the senior midfielder who’s a returning all-state player, took the ball off a Cardinal’s foot after a throw-in play, dribbled to the net and punched it past the goalie, in the second minute of the second OT period.
Ness, closing in on the Elks career scoring record, has two goals and an assist this year.
“Ryan is a known quantity this year and he is getting a lot of attention from opponents,” said Olson.
Cody Christ had a solid game in goal, said the coach.
The Elks (2-2 in conference) will play at Maple Grove on Tuesday evening.
