Updated journal: Henrickson makes it to New York City for memorial programs and services
Sept. 10, 2011
We did manage to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and into lower Manhattan on Sept. 10. We walked around the Groud Zero where many people are doing their own tributes. They had hundreds of motorcycles riding from the former World Trade Center site around Manhattan in tribute to the 9/11 Attacks.
Last night the Marine Corps and the New York Police Department marched the streets of New York last night to pay tribute to 9/11 with musicians playing bagpipes. The whole city is has rallied to make the tribute to all the victims and survivors powerful and meaningful. With the march, thousands of people flowed throughout downtown area.

We started off at 11:30 a.m. driving to the airport and we got into the airport. Our flight took us to Chicago, and then finally late last night we arrived at LaGuardia Airport. We got into out cab and went to our hotel, Last night we went out for dinner. Security seemed to very high around the area with a lot of police around the streets.
As I watch the news this morning it seems that Lower Manhatten where the Memorial will be held will be quite difficult to get around with them closing down sections of streets and parts of the subway to for security reasons. Today’s plan is to go Brooklyn and walk across the bridge into Lower Manhatten right around where the WTC memorial will be.

As I shopped last night to pick up my travel needs, I am reminded that before 9/11 we did not have to buy special items to take on to the air plane. You did not have to worry about taking a carry-on and paying for larger suit cases to go under the plane. One did also not have to go through the screening process that we all now seeem accustomed to now.

Starting to get things ready to go to New York City for the memorial of 9/11. I start by checking the weather to see what to pack. I am also going through my itinerary to make sure that everything is set to go. Our plane leaves Friday at 1:30 pm we have layover in Chicago and we will fly into New York City at 10:30 p.m. on Friday night. So the plan from there is to go to our hotel and check in and we will probably walk around the area, maybe getting something to eat.
Our itinerary for Saturday includes visiting the nieghberhood that I lived in when the attacks were placed on the towers.
Then we plan to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and start our walk through the financial district and picking up our passes to the World Trade Center Museum.
We then will go to the tickets booth to buy tickets to see a Broadway show.
We then will be going to Century 21 which in New York City is a huge department store like a TJ Max. The first store was taken down with the first attack.
We then plan on going to China town and then go to little Italy which is where I will be doing some research for Pompeii Pizzeria.
We then plan to go back to the hotel and go out for dinner and go see which ever Broadway show. After that we plan on going to The View restaurant that is a revolving restaurant on top of the Marriott Marquis that is in Times Square and lets you see all of the building in the city.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, we will be going to the Today Show to be in the audience and see what kind of memorial events they will talk about.
About 9 a.m. we will start heading to our destination to tour the museum of the World Trade Center, which starts at 10:45 am.
We will be going to the top of the Empire state building and they have a tribute video of the World Trade Center.
There is a service at at 6 p.m. in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Memorial to the Attacks in the World Trade Center that we plan to attend.
After the service we will be having dinner at Ray’s Pizzeria in Midtown Manhattan. At night I’m told there is supposed to be a spotlight going into the sky from where the towers were.
On Monday, Sept. 12 our plan is to go to Rockefeller Center and the Statue of Liberty before returning home to Elk River.
