Volleyball: Thunder nipped by Cathedral in 5 games

The Zimmerman Thunder lost a heartbreaker to St. Cloud Cathedral 3-2 on Thursday evening at home. The Crusaders prevailed 27-25, 22-25, 25-21, 9-25, 15-12 in the Granite Ridge Conference duel.

Nikki O’Keefe led the Thunder bid, putting all 39 serves in play with eight going for aces, while making 25 assists, nine kills and 16 digs.

Brooke Borchardt had 18 kills and seen blocks; Emily Garmen 17 digs and 11-for-11 serving and was top serve receiver; Abby Kratzky 17 digs and 12-for-12 serving with three aces; and Janae Mettling six kills, 11 digs and two blocks.

“It was a great battle by both teams,” said Thunder coach Rita Belka. “I’ m very proud of the girls. They never quit fighting.”

Baily Bircher and Alyssa Bright played well off the bench, the coach added.

Zimmerman (1-1 conference, 2-2 overall) will play in the Pine City tournament on Saturday.
