The unbeaten Elk River Elks wore down the Rogers Royals 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 in a furiously-paced match Tuesday evening in Rogers.
Kara Ziemer notched 15 kills and nine digs, Janel Finkbeiner 22 assists and 15 digs, and Jordan Moening nine kills and five ace serves for the Elks (3-0).
“Our two outside hitters (Ziemer and Moening) had no errors, and Janel was awesome with her digging,” noted coach Pam Gothe. “We set her up to dig and they kept hitting at her and she kept pulling them up.”
In game one, Rogers (2-2) came out blazing, scoring 11 straight points to grab a 12-4 lead. Ziemer stopped that streak with a kill, then added another on a tip, to get the Elks jump-started. They pushed ahead 21-20 with two straight aces by Moening, both of them sinkers to the middle of the court, and held the lead for a nice comeback win.
Moening served 14-for-17 with five aces, Finkbeiner 18-for-20 with the team’s other two aces, and Jayde Krauth 17-for-18. Krauth had nine kills and Bailey Lundquist made 14 assists.
(The Star News doesn’t have Rogers statistics at this writing but will add them later.)
Elk River will host Park Center on Thursday, and Rogers will host Cambridge-Isanti, both of them conference openers.
