Baseball: Elks’ Meyer picked for USSSA tourney team

Brandon Meyer, Elk River sophomore baseball player, was selected for a United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) national team that will compete against other countries next year.

Meyer, a pitcher and third baseman, was one of 15 players picked from a field of nearly 100 in invitation-only tryouts at Kissimmee, Florida, Aug. 11-14. Meyer was spotted by USSSA playing for Minnesota Blizzard in a Phoenix tournament over the winter.

He was named to the 15U All-America list and will play in the USSSA Golf Medal Games as a U16 player in July 2012, also at Kissimmee. Team USA will compete against Canada, France, Mexico, Peru, Great Britain, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico.

Meyer  has played two varsity seasons for the Elks and was team MVP and top pitcher as a freshman in 2011. He has been MVP of the  Blizzard the last two years.
