Volleyball: Thunder 1-1 after first week
The Zimmerman Thunder had a 1-1 record after the first week, losing to Rogers 25-16, 25-7, 25-22 on Tuesday, and beating Pine City 25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 25-17 on Thursday.
Against Rogers, Brooke Borchardt had 9 kills, Nikki O’Keefe 7 kills and 10 assists, Amanda Meleen 9 assists, Abby Kratzke 11 digs, and Emily Garmen served 9-for-9 with two aces.
“Rogers has a nice team and just over powered us,” said coach Rita Belka.
In the win over Pine City, Borchardt notched 16 kills, O’Keefe 10, Amber Magnussen 6 and Janae Mettling 4. Garmen sparked in digs (11) and serve receive (2.2). Kratzke made 8 digs and Morgan Inman 7. Meleen made 18 assists and O’Keefe 16. Cassie Ortberg and Meleen aced 4 serves each.
“Better match, but we made way too many of our own mistakes,” said Belka. “The girls played hard and found a way to win. I am proud of the progress, but we still have a way to go. Need to cut down and hitting and serving errors.”
The Thunder will play at the Pine City Invitational on Saturday.
