A smallish Elk River volleyball team is counting on powerful serving to help them win a few matches this season.
The Elks had that weapon going in a season-opening 25-20, 25-9, 25-18 win over Big Lake at home on Tuesday evening.
The Elks served 66-for-74 and were credited with 21 aces, led by Jordan Moening, who was 15-for-19 with 10 aces, and Bailey Lundquist, who was 14-for-14 with six aces.
The Elks started to break the match open when Lundquist served for six straight points, two of them aces, in game two to open a 14-4 lead. Big Lake, after playing well in the first game, missed several serves in game two.
Jayde Krauth, 5-foot-9 senior, led at the net with 10 kills. Kara Ziemer was next with four.
The Elks will host St. Francis on Thursday at 7 p.m.
