The Buffalo Bison scored with 11:17 left and handed  Elk River-Zimmerman a 1-0 loss on Saturday in Elk River.

The Elks dropped to 0-2 with home-field losses to two section rivals. Moorhead beat them 2-1 Thursday.

Dan Thielen got the late goal for Buffalo (1-0). The junior midfielder fielded a through ball from Blake Esnough as the Bison set up a triangle and rushed the net. Elk goalie Cody Christ was drawn out, and Thielen tapped the ball past him on the ground into the far corner.

The Elks did not put a lot of pressure on Bison goalie Eric Selchow.

“We had lots of good chances but we didn’t get the shots on goal,” said coach Tom Olson. “We didn’t pull the trigger, or we missed the net. It reminded me of times last year when we were generating chances but not getting the ball in.”

Olson cited Gavin Doppler and Josh Chuba for leading a good defense effort.

“They were talking, and organizing things really well against Buffalo’s big, strong kids,” said Olson.

The Elks will host Blaine on Tuesday in their conference opener.
