Rogers woman a finalist in ice cream contest
by Joni Astrup
A Rogers woman is one of two finalists in a contest to create the next flavor of Kemps ice cream.
Jennifer Folkens came up with the Land of 10,000 Licks flavor. It is a sweet cream ice cream with thick swirls of caramel and bits of toffee and sea salt sprinkled throughout.
Voting in the Kemps Next Hometown Favorite Flavor Contest will take place at the Minnesota State Fair. There also is online voting and there will be a judging panel. The winner will be announced Sept. 1 at the fair.
Folkens got the idea for the flavor while camping with her family in northern Minnesota this spring. A local candy shop sold caramels sprinkled with sea salt on top and Folkens said they were “fabulous.”
She thought it would make a good ice cream and when she learned of the contest, “I just kind of entered a flavor on a whim.”
She came up with the name because Kemps wanted something with a Minnesota theme. “When I think of Minnesota I think of the lakes,” Folkens explained.
There were more than 300 entries. The other finalist is Pubcorn and Peanuts, created by Kelly Moritz of St. Paul. It contains popcorn-flavored ice cream, crushed salted peanuts and ribbons of dark chocolate.
The winner will receive $2,500, a year’s supply of their ice cream and their flavor will appear on store shelves in 2012. In addition, the winner’s name and story inspiration for the ice cream will be featured on the packaging.
“I never would have guessed it would go this far,” Folkens said. “It’s made for an exciting summer.”
A native of St. Michael, Folkens said she loves to bake and cook and does cake decorating, but has never worked in the food industry. She’s been a stay-at-home mom for the last eight years, but will be going back to work full time in September. She will be working with Internet sales at Trueman Welters in Buffalo.
How the ice cream winner will be chosen
The winner will be chosen at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, through a combination of votes by people at the State Fair, online voting at www.kempsnextflavor.com and a celebrity judging panel.
To vote at the State Fair, stop by the Kemps booth on Machinery Hill at 1 p.m. daily, taste the two final flavors and cast a vote for your favorite.
The celebrity judging panel will include Kemps spokeswoman Teresa Mauer (Joe Mauer’s mom), Martha “Sweet Martha” Rossini Olson and Princess Kay of the Milky Way.
The two finalists were determined by online voting, with more than 4,100 votes cast.
Both flavors have now been developed by Kemps.
“When I created these flavors, I wanted to stay true to the finalist’s original concept,” said Logan Julstrom, senior food technologist for Kemps. “I’m so proud of how the flavors turned out and I feel that either would make a great addition to the Kemps family of ice cream flavors.”
