Apps ready for free, reduced lunch program

Sodexo, the food service provider for the Elk River Area School District, has announced the 2011–2012 online, confidential application for the Free and Reduced program is now available at

Families experiencing financial challenges are encouraged to apply for this benefit program. This confidential program is designed to help families meet the nutritional needs of children enrolled in the Elk River Area School District. The program provides free breakfast daily and free or reduced-price lunch meals.

The process is simple, can be done anywhere Internet service is available and takes less than five minutes to complete. Applicants approved for the program will be notified in writing within 10 working days; approval is valid for one school year. Applicants not initially meeting the criteria are encouraged to reapply if they have a change in income or family status at any time during the school year.

“We had more than 1,500 families apply for free and reduced meals last year,” said Sodexo General Manager Julee Miller. “The system provides an applicant privacy and confidentiality, as they can apply literally anywhere Internet service is available.”

Miller said she urges parents or guardians who are experiencing financial difficulties and are unable to provide a balanced meal for their children to apply immediately.
“By applying now, students who are approved will have meals on their first day of school,” she said.
