Elk tennis star Michaela Schulz is busy on the USTA circuit, including a trip to Texas last week for a team tournament where she played well in oppressive heat.
“It was pretty brutal,” said Schulz about the USTA Zonal 16’s in Waco, where it was up to 106 degrees officially and 15 hotter on the court. “I went through nine gatorades a day.”
The Elk junior-to-be played for North Zone (top 12 ranked players in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and western Wisconsin) at No. 5 singles and No. 5 mixed doubles (with Dustin Britton of Wayzata). She won four matches and lost five.
“We played some really good Texas teams. A lot of academy kids who breathe and eat tennis. I was happy with four wins. Two years ago in 14’s in Virginia Beach I only had one win.”
Schulz won an 18-and-under Level 5 tournament in Sioux Falls and has racked up several doubles wins with Mollie Meldahl of Edina.
