Basketball: Dalbey to coach Zimmerman girls
by Bruce Strand, Sports editor
Lance Dalbey, formerly at Monticello, will be the new girls basketball coach at Zimmerman.
Added to the ZHS staff as an English teacher, he succeeds Greg Heinecke, who resigned after two seasons, announced activities director Jaime Hilyar on Wednesday.
“Lance is really enthusiastic about teaching, about basketball, and about the girls, too,” said Hilyar.
Before being hired, Dalby volunteered for the summer program being run by parent volunteers because they had no coach, Hilyar said.
Dalby, 36, coached the Magic for two years. They were 2-52 the two previous years. His second season, this winter, they were 14-15.
At Zimmerman he takes over another struggling program. The Thunder were 2-26 this year.
“Monticello was in a similar spot, so this is not my first time starting from scratch,” said Dalbey. “I am excited about it. We’ve got great kids. I got to know them for two or three weeks in July. As long as they’re excited, I’m excited.”
Dalbey played baseball and basketball at Mora, and attended Bethel College. He has also taught at Mora and Wayzata.
Zimmerman played against Monticello in the Mississippi 8 but has moved to a new conference, the Granite Ridge, this coming season.
