Tennis: Scheevel, Koehler are ERO open singles champs
Chris Scheevel repeated as men’s champion and Leah Koehler captured the women’s crown Saturday in the singles portion of the 40th annual Elk River Open tennis tournament.
Scheevel, 26, former St. Cloud Cathedral and Bethel College player, foiled Jeremy Thompson of Elk River, current St. Cloud State player, 6-3, 7-5 in the finals of a 16-player field.
Koehler, 2011 ERHS grad who was captain and No. 3 singles player last fall and played in three state team tournaments, topped Lisa Scheevel, Chris’s sister, 10-6 in the women’s finals.
The Scheevels played at St. Cloud Cathedral. Chris played for Bethel and Lisa current plays for Bethel.
To reach the finals, Chris Scheevel beat Josh Chuba 10-4, Joe Hodgson 10-2 and Reggie Ronning 10-4.
Thompson, who was also mixed doubles runner-up (with Katie Kotchevar) on Friday, reached the singles finals beating Sam Scheevel 10-6, Nick Scheevel 10-5 and Mitchel Brandell 10-8.
Lisa Scheevel reached the finals beating two Elk River players, Grace Zachman 10-2 and Camille Kraljic 10-1. Koehler beat Kristen Hedtke 10-5 and Chris Burns 10-0.
Brandell placed third in Men’s Open beating Ronning 6-4, 6-3. Kraljic placed third in Women’s Open beating Burns (score not available). Brandell and Kraljic are both Elk seniors-to-be.
Champs of other divisions
Jesse Bragg, Elk senior-to-be, won Men’s A Singles by toppling two players he had not beaten before — Elk teammate Nathan Chantamonthry 10-7 in the finals, and Elk coach Randy Ronning 10-3 in the semifinals.
Ronning placed third, beating Joe Wetherhille 10-3.
Brandon Quach won Men’s B Singles, as he led Jimmy Chantamonthry 4-1 in the finals when the latter had to default due to cramps.
Jen Koehler was the Women’s A Singles champion.
Doubles on Sunday
The tournament will conclude with men’s and women’s doubles on Sunday.
