Elk River plans to proceed with hiring a parks and recreation director now, rather than waiting until a permanent city administrator is hired later this year.
There are 81 applicants for the parks and recreation director position. Interim City Administrator Bob Thistle will narrow that to 15-20. An interview committee will select the top five to interview, and then send the top two on to the city council for consideration.
The parks and recreation director position has been vacant since Bill Maertz left in June 2010. The council offered the position to a candidate in April, but he declined it.
In another park-related matter, the Elk River City Council is considering moving the parks and recreation department from Lions Park Center to City Hall.
The city council has directed Thistle to research the matter, looking at issues like the feasibility and the cost of a potential move.
Lions Park Center is located at 1104 Lions Park Dr. in Elk River.
