‘Phantom’ fashions: Costumes could be stars of the show

Elaborate costuming is one of the reasons “The Phantom of the Opera” is the biggest-budget play ever presented in Elk River.

“We will have 200 different costumes,” said director Eileen Bowersox, whose many hats for this production includes that of costume director. “We had to make two trips to St. Cloud because we couldn’t bring them all home in one trip.”

Resplendent in gold are Ashley Falenschek (front) Candace Hudson and Molly Rinkenberger.

The bulk of the costumes for “Phantom,” set in 19th century  Paris, have been rented from Invincible

Costume of St. Cloud, but many others were taken from the closets of Elk River High School’s theatre department and Youth Theatre Workshop. “Some are being made, too,” said Bowersox.

Thirty-five actors are being outfitted, many of them for multiple roles.

Along with clothes, in many cases facial hair– an array of beards, mustaches, sideburns — must be provided, Bowersox said. With several males having multiple roles they can’t grow their own facial hair.

“Phantom,” a joint project by ERHS and Elk River Community Theatre, will open Friday evening at Zabee Theatre at the high school.

Leads are played by Kristen Rokke of ERHS as Christine, and Josh Smith, a Bethel College student living in New Brighton, as the Phantom.

Katie Wolf as an opera singer.

“Phantom” is rarely available for local theatre. When it was made available for three schools in Minnesota this spring, Bowersox acted quickly to snap it up. The rights alone cost more than $7,000, said Bowersox, and they are not skimping on sets, costumes, or directors.
