Fun in Sun kicked off

Reading program has kids engaged in reading having fun with various themes

Summer vacation means bike riding, camping and swimming for many kids, but reading?

Students at Otsego Elementary School are invited to add reading to that vacation schedule this summer through the school’s “Fun in the Sun” reading program.

First-grade teacher Shannon Jung is heading up the summer reading program that involves a different theme each Wednesday in the school’s library.

The theme for week one, June 22 from was pets. Jung and other volunteers took their pets to school as part of the theme and read pet and other animal-related stories. Kids were encouraged to do their own reading around this theme throughout that week as well.

Assistant Principal Scott Lempka says kids will be given incentives to read 100 minutes each week.

The second theme was Going Hollywood.

The others will be:

•July 13, Mystery from 1 to 3 p.m.

•July 20, Science MAGIC from 4 to 6 p.m. with a magic show at 4:30 p.m.

•July 27, Puppets from 1 to 3 p.m.

Aug. 3 wraps up the “Fun in the Sun” summer reading program with a book fair from 1 to 6 p.m.

Students and parents interested in helping with a theme, or those with questions, can call Jung at 763-241-3494.
