Three Rogers football players and one from Zimmerman are happily back in action this week as members of the North squad for the state coaches association all-star game Saturday evening.
“We’re having fun, for sure,” said Devin Waters, by phone from St. Peter on Thursday, where the teams practice twice a day. “It’s great to be back in pads, and everyone’s cool around here.”
Everyone can play this game, too.
“It’s not like high school,” said Jamal Samaha, “where there’s a few elite players and the rest just pretty good or just OK. Everybody’s good here.”
Waters is stationed at middle linebacker while his Rogers teammates Derek Vidor and Peter Stanley are at wide receiver and center, respectively. Samaha is playing defensive end. Each is at his likely college position except Waters, who’s projected as a lineman for college.
The North, coached by Ron Stolski of Brainerd, will take on the South, coached by Dave Nelson of Mahtomedi, at the TCF Bank Stadium, where the Gophers play, on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Waters will play at St. Cloud State, Vidor at St. Thomas, Stanley at St. Scholastica, and Samaha at Augustana.
