Former Big Lake Township man, 26, drowns in backyard pool

Funeral services will be held Thursday for a 26-year-old Monticello man who was found in a backyard pool in the early morning hours of Father’s Day.

Riley Karn was underwater and unresponsive when he was discovered about 3:43 a.m. on June 19 at a residence in the 17100 block of 182nd Avenue in Big Lake Township. Sherburne County deputies dispatched to the home performed CPR with the help of a New River Ambulance crew. Karn was pronounced deceased on scene, according to Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott.

Investigators from the Criminal Investigative Unit were called.  The death remains under investigation; however, no foul play is suspected.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner will complete an autopsy. The results are still pending.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial is planned for 11 a.m. on June 23 at the Church of St. Andrew, 566 Fourth St. N.W., Elk River.

Karn is survived by his parents, Charlie and Rose; brother, Brady; and many other relatives and friends.

He was the Internet sales manager for Kia in St. Cloud.

He loved cars, food, movies, the Twins, a good time, and his family and friends.

Dare’s Funeral Home in Elk River is handling the arrangements.
