Fun in the Sun reading program kicks off in Otsego

Summer vacation means bike riding, camping and swimming for many kids, but reading?

Students at Otsego Elementary School are invited to add reading to that vacation schedule this summer through the school’s “Fun in the Sun” reading program.

First grade teacher Shannon Jung is heading up the summer reading program that involves a different theme each Wednesday in the school’s library.

The theme for week one, June 22 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. is pets. Jung and other volunteers will take their pets to school as part of the theme and will read pet and other animal-related stories. Kids will be encouraged to do their own reading around this theme throughout the week as well.

Assistant principal Scott Lempka says kids will be given incentives to read 100 minutes each week.

Other themes and library times are:

•June 29, Going Hollywood from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

•July 13, Mystery from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

•July 20, Science MAGIC from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a magic show at 4:30 p.m.

•July 27, Puppets from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

August 3 wraps up the “Fun in the Sun” summer reading program with a book fair from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Students and parents interested in helping with a theme, or those with questions, can call Jung at 763-241-3494.
