Tennis: Gearou twins beat teammates for doubles consolation title at state

For Josh and Sam Gearou, the third time was the charm in their friendly doubles rivalry with two Elk teammates.

The eighth-grade identical twins defeated juniors Mitchel Brandell and Ryan Ness 7-5, 6-2 on Friday for the Class AA doubles consolation championship of the state tournament at the U of M.

The Gearou’s, who last year reached the state semifinals as seventh-graders, lost to Brandell and Ness in both sub-section and sectionals, and went to state as section runners-up.

Both teams lost in the first round of state Thursday and won in the consolation bracket (reported previously). On Friday. the Gearou’s  beat Chisago Lakes’ Brett Lizotte and Johannes Rau 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to reach the consolation finals while Brandell and Ness tripped Forest Lake’s Zachary Decker and Brett Gravelle 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

Martin Beck and Luke Ellfson of Minneapolis South were the doubles champions.

Dusty Boyer of Forest Lake was singles champion, beating Eric Frueh of Rochester Century in the finals.
