A seventh-inning rally be Elk River fell short as three runners scored but a fourth was thrown out at the plate, and the Elks’ season ended with a 6-5 loss to St. Francis on Friday.
The No. 9 seeded Elks trailed the No. 2 Saints 6-2 going into the seventh of the Section 7AAA quarterfinal at St. Francis.
The Elks loaded the bases with nobody out with walks by Porter Morrell and Terry Hadden and a single by Timmy Sanford.
A Logan Paige RBI single, an Aaron Pipenhagen RBI walk, and a RBI sac fly by Brandon Meyer made the score 6-5.
With one out and runners on first and third, Corey Collins hit a bouncing ground ball that landed just beyond the pitcher but the Saints shorstop gunned out the tying run at the plate.
The Elks finished 8-14.
St. .Francis scored three runs in the first and three in the fourth. Hadden took the loss, allowing those six runs in six innings, striking out three. Sanford was 2-for-3 for the Elks.
Lucas Niemeyer got the win for Saint Francis, throwing six innings, and allowing four runs. Ryan Stoeckel faced three batters and allowed one run. Nick Wilson pitched one inning for the save.
Both Travis Brenny and Warren Bauman were 2-for-3 with RBI doubles for Saint Francis.
