Bell tolls for twenty vets

Mike Beyer, the 2nd Vice Commander of the Elk River American Legion, tapped on a bell as this past year’s roll call of deceased veterans was read this past Monday.

 

The Memorial Day service was moved to the Legion after storms moved the area in the morning. Nearly 300 people made it to the 135th Annual Elk River Memorial Day program.

Those names that were read included:

Richard Berg, Gordon Bergman, John Blaisdell, Wayne Bigelow, Lyle Christensen, Ervin Dahlheimer, John R. Jones, John Lundemo, Gordy Marks, Donald McPherson, Julius Nemeth, Dale Newell, Dave Niedzielski, Floyd Rasmussen, Thomas Rule, Jerome Schempf, Robert Schwappach, Virgil Sregner and Joseph Strickland.

Curt Swanson, V.F.W. Post 5518 Post Commander, was the master of ceremonies. Brian Gardner, the American Legion Commander, read the roll call.

Diane Pederson, music director at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, and Vonnie Christensen, of United Methodist Church, sang at the ceremony. Awards were given to Jim and Rose Holt, Gloria Maher and William Konop. Watch the Star News for more on their awards and contributions.
