Baseball: Thunder rally, nip Rockford 13-11 in playoff opener
Zimmerman, the No. 2 seed in the west sub-section, scored six runs in the sixth to beat the No. 7 Rockford 13-11 in section 5AA playoffs Tuesday at Zimmerman.
The Thunder loaded the bases on two errors and a single. A suicide squeeze by Evan Bye scored two runs, and a wild pitch another, followed by an RBI single by Christian Korlath, and then a two-run home run by Brandon Giese. That gave Zimmerman a 13-9 lead heading into the seventh.
“Good teams find a way to win and we had a good team effort,” said coach Matt Kraus.
Kameron Crandall started or Zimmerman (11-9), throwing 2 1/3 innings, and allowing four runs. Kyle Connelly got the win in relief, pitching 4 2/3 innings, and allowing seven runs (six earned).
Korlath also hit a two-run homer for Zimmerman. and finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Joshua Green took the loss for Rockford, pitching six innings, and allowing ten runs (five earned). Brent Lamere allowed three runs in an inning.
Tyler Barningham was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run . Green was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI for the Rockets (3-16).
Zimmerman has one more round of single elimination, meeting No. 3 seed Maple Lake at Delano on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The winner advances to double-elimin starting Thursday in Loretto at 4:30 p.m.
