“Jacob loved sports and I think he would have really liked this idea,” Ashley Schleper said of Jacob’s Run.
This year’s will be the 10th annual run and will be held once again during Zimmerman’s Wild West Days. Ashley and Jacob’s mother, Deb, are coordinating the run along with a number of Jacob’s other classmates. The run benefits the Jacob Van Hoever Memorial Scholarship, offering $500 scholarships to students who distinguish themselves as good citizens in the Elk River Area School District. “Jacob would have graduated in 2006 and we had nine students receive the scholarship that year,” Ashley Schleper said. “We had six scholarships this year and average about five to six students per year. Since starting this, we’ve awarded 41 scholarships.”
Jacob Van Hoever was killed in a car accident on County Road 1 on Aug. 4, 2001, at the age of 13. He left behind a legacy of promise and dedication to sports — a passion that kindled a desire in the Van Hoever family to create the Jacob Van Hoever Memorial Scholarship with a run in Jacob’s honor.
Jacob’s Run will commence this year 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30 at Gold’s Gym in Zimmerman. Participants will run or walk the four-mile circuit around Lake Fremont, returning to cross the finish line at Gold’s Gym. Ashley said the run/walk normally draws 200 – 300 people and she is looking forward to a great turnout this year.
All proceeds from Jacob’s Run go to support the Jacob Van Hoever Memorial Scholarship. Refreshments will be provided and participants will receive a free T-shirt for registering (first come, first served basis). The top three male and female finishers will receive medals. Draw prizes are also available at the finish line.
