A new volunteer recognition program has been established by the Elk River City Council.
The City of Elk River Volunteer of the Month Award is intended to recognize Elk River citizens for their volunteer contributions and commitments to community service.
A winner will be chosen each month and honored at a city council meeting and presented with a certificate.
Mayor John Dietz spearheaded the program. He patterned it after the Elk River Park Commission’s park volunteer of the month.
“People don’t volunteer to get recognition,” Dietz said. “They volunteer because they want to make a difference in their community, but they should be recognized. Where would we be without all the volunteers we have? We’d be in a world of hurt.”
Volunteers may be nominated by an individual, agency, corporation or organization. To qualify for this award a person must have done volunteer work in the city, but not necessarily for the city. Dietz said it could include volunteering for everything from the Boy Scouts to the American Legion, CAER to a church.
The volunteer of the month will be chosen by a committee that will be formed. Dietz will serve on the committee but the other members haven’t been named yet.
