Approximately 39 students will graduate from Ivan Sand Community School on Tuesday, May 31.
The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. at Elk River High School’s Zabee Theater.
Juniors Meghan Bengston and Nick Stoffels will be the masters of ceremonies.
Ivan Sand Principal Val Bakken said the ceremony will highlight some of the graduating seniors as speakers. Students who will be speaking will include Katie Grant, Alyse Oban, Aaron Rost, Emily Pietrzak, Alison Johnson, Cecelia Skramstad, Ralph Walberg, Alysha Adamson and Nebyou Demessie.
Bakken, meanwhile, described the school year as action-packed.
“More than half of our enrollment was represented by students new to Ivan Sand, so this brought about many opportunities to learn, grow and form a school community,” she said. “This year’s group of seniors have faced many challenges along the way but with perseverance and resiliency, moved forward to obtain their high school diplomas.”
Many of the seniors participated in Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs (MAAP) STARS events including the fall leadership conference, Legislative Day at the Capitol, and regional and state competitions.
“We are proud to announce that senior Alyse Oban was nominated as the state MAAP STARS Student of the Year,” Bakken said. “This was an especially exciting accomplishment for Alyse and our school community.”
A school leadership class also was the focus of activity. Many of the seniors have at some point during their time at Ivan Sand Community School participated in the leadership class, Bakken said.
This year the class planned the school rally and the Fall Festival, organized a Violence Prevention Week and coordinated Winter Week, which included a multi-cultural Festival of Foods, and held a Drug Awareness Week.
Ivan Sand is an alternative high school located at 1232 School St. in Elk River.
