An outstanding effort by the long-jumpers was the highlight for Elk River as the Elks placed sixth at the state Class AAA true-team meet Friday evening in Stillwater.

Hopkins edged Mounds View to win the nine-team meet.

Logan Ann Daulton won long jump with 17-6, with Kelly Edwards third at 17-0 and Dani Detloff fifth with 16-11 1/4. Daulton and Edwards had personal-records while Detloff, who won the same event last year with 17-1, just missed a PR.

Daulton, a freshman, had the Elks’ lone first-place, while anchoring a second-place 4-by-100 team and placing ninth in the 400 dash with 1:00.98. The 4-by-100, also including Alana Embury, Detloff, and Edwards, finished second behind Hopkins with 49.81.

Detloff, a junior, was runner-up in the 200 with a personal-best 12.56, behind Hopkins’ Mary Tanoettop (12.46). She also placed fifth in the 200 (26.27).

The Elk girls, Section 4AAA champs, were making their seventh state true-team appearance and second in row. Last year the Elks placed fifth.

Coach Russ Gnan called it a good performance.

“We had a lot of runners with PR’s. This weather was much more conducive to that than the sectional when it was hot,” said Gnan. “The long jumpers had a great day. To get three of the top five in high-calibre meet like this is very impressive.

“I expected that we’d be right about sixth and that’s where it looks like we’ll wind up.”

About the long-jumpers, Bill Martell, who coaches them, said it helped that the girls were able to loosen up.

“If they can do a running event right before they jump, that really helps,” said Martell, “so we told them to get back here as quick as they can after they run. They were all able to jump after a run. Look at Logan Ann, she had two jumps in the 15′s, then she had a running event and came back and popped off that seventeen-six.”

Freshman Mollie Detloff placed third in discus (127-7) and 11th in shot put (35-10 1/4). Nicole Thorndal was eighth in discus (112-11). Embury and Layni Bednarz each pole-vaulted 9-0 with Embury placing eighth and Bednarz 12th.

Brienne Dehnkes placed seventh in 300 hurdles (48.23), Anna Haugen eighth in the 800 (2:22.67), Rachel Ness eighth in the 3200 (11:40.22), and Erin Ness 12th in the 1600 (5:20.82).

Conditions were cool and damp, with light rain falling during several of the later events.

Next for the Elks is the conference meet Tuesday and Thursday at Coon Rapids.
