McCabe Buege of Rogers, top-ranked high school golfer in the state, shot a career-best 64, eight under par, on Thursday at St. Cloud Country Club, leading the Royals to victory in the St. Cloud Invitational.
Coach Dan Bursheim reports that Buege had four birdies and an eagle (on 9) for a 30 on the front. The made it seven-under with a birdie on the par-5 No. 10 hole.
He hit a 350-yard drive on the par-5 No. 15 hole, leaving himself a wedge to the green for a tap-in birdie. But he pushed his putt wide on 16 for his lone bogie, and then lipped out on 17 to miss a birdie. On 18, he left know doubt when he hit a hybrid, missed the left edge of the green, and chipped in for his seventh birdie.
Rogers scored 293, Orono 304, Willmar 308, and Buffalo and Marshall each 311, leading the 23-school field.
The Royals picked up their first invitational win, after placing second at Monticello, Brainerd, the Tri-State, and Albert Lea.
Charlie Braniff of St. Cloud Tech was runner-up, eight strokes behind Buege with 72.
Rogers junior Corey Muenzhuber tied for fourth with 74. He was 3-over at the turn, but had three birdies on holes 14-17. Morgan Rask shot 76, Jordan Rykal 79, Zach Hnath 80 and Andy Suedbeck 8
