Baseball: Royals tip Bluejackets 9-8 in 9 innings

Noah Schmidt knocked home the game-winner as the Rogers Royals tipped Cambridge-Isanti 9-8 in nine innings at home on Monday.

The Royals overcame an early 5-0 deficit, took an 8-6 lead, gave up two runs in the seventh to send it to extra innings, and prevailed in the ninth when Chad Miller beat out an infield hit, took second on a passed ball and scored on Schmidt’s base hit.

Mark Stemler pitched the distance for the Royals, who are playing seven games in six days. He gave up 13 hits but just one walk, and struck out five.

Schmidt was 2-for-4 with two RBII, Bjorn Bloom 3-for-4 with three runs and a double, Andrew Smith 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Neal Smith 3-for-5 with two runs.

Rogers is 5-11 in conference and 5-12 overall. The Bluejackets are 9-6 and 10-7.

Reed Burns was 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Blejackets and Clayton Jennessen 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Ryan Epsen took the loss in relief.

Rogers will play in a St. Cloud tournament Friday and Saturday, starting with Minnehaha Academy on Friday at 5 p.m. in Cold Spring.
