Elk River-Zimmerman wrapped up its fifth straight conference championship with a 7-0 win over Armstrong on Monday at home.

After winning that makeup match, the Elks also beat Holy Family Catholic 7-0 in a non-conference match, improving to 19-2 overall.

The Elks are 9-0 in the Northwest Suburban Conference with one match left, against Andover at home on Thursday.

“We are getting close to 50 consecutive conference wins, dating back to six seasons ago,” said coach Randy Ronning.  “Nice run.”

He added: “These players are receiving their awards now, but they earned them last summer, fall, and winter.  The work they did then, and for some for several years now, is why they are doing so well now.”

Ronning credited Curt Johnson, who has coached several of the players in private lessons, for “the fantastic work he has done with these young men.  He is invaluable to Elk River tennis, boys and girls.”

Josh Gearou won the most exciting match of the day, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (13-11) at No. 1 singles against HFC’s Connor Oberle.
