Baseball: Pioneers open with 10-0 loss to Loretto

Loretto plated five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 10-0, seven-inning shutout of the Elk River Pioneers on Sunday in the season opener at Elk River.
Alex Hoff threw 3 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (four earned), and striking out two in a losing effort for the Pioneers.
Mathias Duevel tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief , allowing two runs and striking out four. Conor Edwards pitched a scoreless seventh.
Elk River managed just three hits and committed three errors in the loss. Tony Jarmoluk and Austin Kopka were both 1-for-2 for the Pioneers (0-1).
Adam McGrane got the win for the Larks (1-0), tossing five scoreless innings, and striking out three. Troy Beckman pitched two shutout innings, striking out four.
For Loretto, Ryan Schaust was 3-for-4 with three runs. Todd Roth was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs. Reed Pawelk was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
The Pioneers, who were rained out a week earlier in their scheduled opener at Rockford, travel to Mound next Saturday.
