Mildred “Milly” Derr, 94, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Elk River, died Saturday, April 16, 2011.
She was born Feb. 10, 1917, to Arthur and Emma (Gustafson) Dalen in Minneapolis. She lived her early years with her Grandfather Gustafson in Worthington, Minn., following the death of her father and brother in the great 1918 flu pandemic.
She graduated from Becker High and married high school sweetheart Lester Derr in August 1936. They moved to Elk River and were active in many organizations. Following his death in 1974 and her retirement, she moved to Mesa, Ariz., in 1985.
Mrs. Derr was active in her church wherever she resided and was especially proud of being a founding member of Becker Lutheran Church and Central Lutheran Church in Elk River. Friends will remember she loved to dote on her grandchildren and play cards with friends and family. She organized several card clubs at her senior center in Mesa.
A memorial service will be Friday, May 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Elk River Lutheran Church-elca, 19437 Evans St. N.W., Elk River.
Survivors include daughter, Patrice Scharber (Ron) of College Station, Texas; sons, Michael (Judy) of Phoenix, and Douglas (Ann) of St. Paul; three granddaughters, Deborah, Pam and Elizabeth; brother, Jerry Anderson, of Tucson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
