Arts Alliance to feature East Asian style works by area artists

"Grass Bird Water" on cloth by Chris Wilson

“Fly Away,” an exhibit of East Asian brush painting by mostly local artists started Wednesday at the Elk River Arts Alliance Gallery and will continue through June 4.

Known as sumi-e, this is a Japanese-style ink and wash medium. Common characteristics of sumi-e are spirited brushwork and the consideration of negative space as an important design element.

“Glad” on rice paper by Sue Fredrickson.

A reception for the artists will be held today (Saturday) from 2 to 5 p.m.

Featured artists are Chris Wilson, Gail Walsh, David Jensen, Karen LaQuia, Jill Sizer, Patricia Gustafson, Collette Cumella, Tom Dimock, Dee Teller and Sue Fredrickson.

The gallery at 716 Main St., Elk River, is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
