Softball: Elks get payback 3-1 win over Crimson

Moriah Bruns pitched a four-hitter while Kaityn Roche and Bethani Athey supplied the big hits as Elk River toppled Maple Grove 3-1 at  home Thursday.

The Elks (8-3 conference, 10-4 overall) have won four straight, and six of seven.

“It’s near the end of the season and the girls are pulling it together and playing as a team,” said coach Stacey Sheetz.

They avenged an earlier 3-0 loss to Maple Grove and the same pitcher, Cayl Sadler.

“She had 12 strikeouts last time, so we focused on getting the bat on the ball,” said the coach.

Bruns had four strikeouts and two walks, and the defense made just one error.

Sadler gave up six hits and three walks while striking out seven. The Crimson (7-4 7-4) had no errors.

Roche hit two doubles and drove home a run and Athey socked a solo home run in the sixth for a 3-1 lead. Both were 2-for-3.

The Elks will play their first-ever home night game on Friday vs. Osseo at 7:30 p.m. at Lake Orono Park.
