Baseball: Thunder nip Becker 6-5 with homer, triple play

A three-run homer and a triple play helped boost Zimmerman to a 6-5 win over Becker at home on Thursday.

Takuma Padilla hit the three-run homer in the last of the sixth, giving the Thunder a 6-5 lead. The lefthander’s blast hit the right-field scoreboard, capping a five-run inning.

The triple play, achieved earlier, came about when pitcher Brandon Sevre fielded a comebacker with runners at first and third. He threw to first for the out. Becker then made a couple of baserunning  errors, and the Thunder threw them both out. The triple play went from Sevre to Takuma at first to catcher Evan Bye to  secondbaseman Kam Crandall and back to Padilla.

Sevre, a sophomore, won his varsity debut, giving up five runs in six innings. Kyle Connelly pitched the seventh, striking out three batters for the save. Connelly was also 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Thunder are 4-7 after winning three of their last four.

Zimmerman will host Cambridge-Isanti on Tuesday.
