City awarded grant for trail solar lighting

Elk River has been awarded a $69,365 grant to help pay for solar lighting on two parts of the Great Northern Trail.
Total cost of the project will be $92,486, with the city paying $23,121 or 25 percent.
The project includes:
•Solar-powered LED lighting that will illuminate the trail tunnel under County Road 33 when motion sensors detect trail users approaching.
•At 221st Avenue and the trail, there will be solar-powered street lights and flashing devices to warn vehicles of the presence of people using the trail. These also would be activated by motion sensors that detect trail users approaching the crossing.
The Great Northern Trail is a recreational trail that runs on an old railroad bed from Meadowvale Elementary School to the northern city limits.
