Thunder strikes

After an excellent team effort and thunderous send-off, the Zimmerman Knowledge Bowl team earned fifth place at state.

The top 48 Knowledge Bowl teams in the state went head-to-head in Brainerd April 7 and 8 for the title of state champion.

Teams advanced to the championship round after defeating more than 800 teams statewide since the fall. At the state meet teams compete against one another in one written and five oral rounds of questions, for a total of 285 questions.

The Thunder Knowledge Bowl team’s secret weapon is no longer a secret, as other competing teams watched as the boys from Zimmerman battled one another playing Risk. The team was able to play two complete games throughout the tournament as they waited between rounds.

“The students get pretty pumped to play, almost like Knowledge Bowl gets in the way of Risk,” Coach Peter Pouliot jokes.

“Playing the two games of Risk was my favorite memory of the meet,” team member Matt Onarheim said.

The team finished strongly at the end of the meet and displayed their teamwork skills very well by sticking together until the very end.

“The tournament was a nice ending to a really wonderful season,” said Pouliot.
