Community members take up the cross for an annual Good Friday pilgrimage

Children and families came down Main Street with a cross as part of a Good Friday pilgrimage hosted by Elk River churches.

Elk River area churches hosted a community-wide pilgrimage today (April 22) on Good Friday.

A crowd gathered in the parking lot of Central Lutheran Church and proceeded to seven different churches in town, picking up more walkers along the way.

At each church,  participants recounted the last words from the cross. Those involved also heard a scripture reading, sang a song and had a prayer read to them at each of the stops.

The practice of gathering between noon and 3 p.m. originated with 17th-century Peruvian Jesuits, according to a memo on the community-wide pilgrimage.
