Alice Hawkins, 96, of Elk River, formerly of St. Michael and Hassan, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at the Guardian Angels Care Center in Elk River.
She was born Jan. 28, 1915, in Milaca to Orley and Lillian Martin. In 1927 the family moved to a farm near Rockford, where she attended high school.
On Sept. 14, 1932, she and Hilton (Sonnie) Schaefer were married in Buffalo. They lived in Northeast Minneapolis where they had a small “ma and pa” grocery store.
Mr. Schaefer died in January 1973. On Oct. 13, 1973, she married Walter Hawkins at St. John’s Church in Hassan. They lived on a farm in Hassan until 1999 when they moved to St. Michael, where they lived until 2002, when Mr. Hawkins died.
Mrs. Hawkins loved traveling and camping and went on many trips throughout her life. Her fondness for the mountains led them many times to Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. She spent time camping at her sister’s farm in the Hill City area well into her 90s.
She was a long-time member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hassan and will be buried there.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday, April 9) at River of Life Church in Elk River, officiated by the Rev. Bob Johnson.
She is survived by stepsons, Richard (Fran) Hawkins of Dallas, Texas, Bruce (Deb) Hawkins of Elk River, and Robert (LeeAnn) Hawkins of Great Falls, Mont.; sisters, Marjorie Childs and Betty (George) Biskey; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by brothers, Maurice and Raymond, and sister Evelyn.
