Firm chosen to do street engineering

The Elk River City Council has chosen Bolton & Menk Inc. to handle the engineering of proposed 2011 street improvements.
Nine companies responded to the city’s request for proposals for engineering services. Bolton & Menk’s proposal was the lowest at $109,195. Proposals ranged as high as $159,854, or 9.5 to 13 percent of the total estimated construction cost.
In a memo to the council, City Engineer Justin Femrite said before soliciting competitive bids on reconstruction projects, the city historically has been charged 27-30 percent for the same service.
The city is proposing to do some street reconstruction work this summer. An open house is tentatively set for May 19, and a hearing for June 6.
