Jena Jondahl, Winona State freshman gymnast from Elk River, was national runner-up in vault last Saturday.
Jondahl placed second in the D-IIII nationals at Wisconsin-Eau Claire, scoring 9.650 with her front handspring on, front tuck somersault off (1 1/2 revolutions).
“It was one of my best, but the vault I won regionals with was my best one,” said Jondahl.
Jondahl was one of five Winona gymnasts to qualify for nationals and the lone freshman. She earned WUS’s highest placement.
“Jena has had a great freshman year with us,” said coach Becky Rolbiecki. “She finished her first season as a Warrior with a remarkable second place finish.”
As an Elk senior last year, Jondahl won state titles in uneven bars and floor exercise while placing 16th in vault, but the latter was her best event in college this year.
Robb Rotrammel, former Elk all-state swimmer on the St. Cloud State team, said hs junior year was “just average” with season-bests of 21.67 in the 50 freestyle and 46.60 in the 100 freestyle that were close to personal bests. He had several first- and second-places in small meets.
Jennifer Dowd, sophomore guard from Rogers on the St. Cloud State basketball team, averaged 4.2 points and 16.5 minutes off the bench for the Huskies (12-14). She had 101 points, 35 rebounds and 30 steals.
Laura Ryan, the former Elk state champion diver who placed first, second and third in her three events at the Big Ten meet for Indiana on Feb. 16-19, did not qualify for nationals as she fell short during zone competition at Austin, Texas, March 17-19, ending her freshman season.
