Basketball: Thunder drub EVW in section opener

Thirteen players scored as the Zimmerman Thunder romped 87-42 over Eden Valley-Watkins in their section opener and homecourt finale on Thursday evening.

 

Gavin Doppler led with 16 points, with Blake Ehley adding 11, Kyle Connelly 10 and Caleb Lunning nine. The Thunder led 52-18 at the half. Ehley notched 5 steals, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, and Lunning had 4 assists and 5 steals.

 

Eden Valley-Watkins finished 5-21.

 

The Thunder (19-8) face Kimball (14-11) on Saturday, 6 p.m.,  at STMA, in the Section 5AA quarterfinals.

 

The winner will meet Maple Lake or St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday at STMA, 6 p.m., in the semifinals, with finals Saturday, 6:30 p.m., at St. Cloud State.

In the 16-team tournament, top seeds are Zimmerman in the north and Howard Lake-Waverly in the south.
