Swimming: Elks gain consolation finals in four events

Elk River-Zimmerman-Spectrum swimmers have reached the consolation finals in four events after Friday night’s Class AA state preliminaries at the University of Minnesota.

Friend Bechtel placed ninth in both the 100 freestyle (48.14) and 100 backstroke (53.98).

Aaron Schwab placed 10th in the backstroke (54.37) and 16th in the individual medley (2:02.25).

The 400 freestyle relay team of Andy Lee, Collin Krueger, Bechtel and Schwab placed 14th in 3:19.71. Lee subbed for Jacob Christy, who was ill.

Krueger did not make finals in distance events as he placed 19th in the 200 with 1:48.62 and 21st in the 500 with 4:56.06. His 500 time lowered his school record.

“We swam well, better than at sectionals,” said coach Denise Eidem. “We are looking forward to swimming better in the finals.”
