Basketball: Royal boys snag STMA in OT again, 68-65
R.J. Dean sank a game-winning 3-point shot at the buzzer in overtime as the Rogers Royals made it a two-game sweep of their arch-rival St. Michael-Albertville 68-65 on Friday night.
Trevor Morlock led with 22 points as the Royals closed their Mississippi 8 schedule with a 12-4 record.
STMA was dislodged from first place, leaving Buffalo as the champion once again with a 14-2 mark. The Knights finished 13-3 with two of those losses to Rogers, both in overtime.
Rogers (17-8) will open at Section 5AAA Thursday against Becker at home, 7 p.m.
Regulation ended 61-61 with Michael Mooney making the game-tying basket for STMA on the way to a game-high 27 points.
With Morlock scoring two field goals in overtime, the score was 65-65 with 30 seconds left. STMA had the ball, but they suffered a turnover.
Rogers went for one shot that was taken by Dean, a senior guard, who nailed it and finished with eight points.
Michael Schreiber scored 13 points, Josh Turnquist 10, Trevor Berkley 9, Dean 8 and Austin Barbeln 6 for Rogers.
The Royals made six 3-pointers in the first half and led 40-33.
For STMA, Jared Moran and Taylor Burslie added 13 points each and Bursley had 8 rebounds.
Rogers beat STMA by the same 68-65 score on the Knights’ court in January.
