Thomas David Rule, 67, of Elk River, died at home Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, of pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Minneapolis on Jan. 17, 1944, to Thomas and Fay (Ruebsam) Rule.
He graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis and attended the University of Minnesota, pursuing a degree in pharmacy. In 1968, he became a Minneapolis police officer, retiring as sergeant after 31 years.
Mr. Rule’s interest in competitive pistol shooting resulted in many family camping adventures. It was a close fellowship with other police families and those ties remain.
After retirement, he continued to enjoy his membership with the Elk River Sportsman’s Club.
He was grateful for the privilege of being a grandfather and favorite baby sitter to three grandchildren. He also became a creative cook. One of his specialities was chili.
He loved technology, trivia, the telling of stories and the gift of music.
A celebration of his life was held Monday, Feb. 21 at Union Congregational Church in Elk River.
Mr. Rule is survived by his mother, Fay; wife of 42 years, Bonnie; children, Cara, Brian and Thomas C “Chris”; grandchildren, Fay, Elizabeth and David; sisters, Lois Strenge, Lee Fernand, and Myrna Rule; and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas, and brothers, Gilbert, and Dean.
