Basketball: Thunder girls nip Milaca in playoffs
A last-second shot by Heather McCormick was the game-winner as the Zimmerman Thunder picked up just their second win of the season, 39-38 over Milaca, in their playoff opener on Monday evening in Milaca.
The Thunder (2-25) were seeded ninth and Milaca eighth in the north half of Section 5AA. The Thunder now face No. 1 St. Cloud Cathedral on Saturday, 6 p.m., at St. Michael-Albertville.
McCormick had 11 points, including two 3-pointers in the first half as the Thunder rallied from an 11-point deficit to a one-point lead.
With Zimmerman down by one in the final seconds, Ashley Dignau got the ball to McCormock on the right wing. She shot just before time expired, and the ball rolled around the rim and dropped through for the win.
“This was a great win on the road and can be used as a confidence builder going into the new Granite Ridge Conference next season,” said coach Gregory Heinecke.
